Sharmila Murthy is a Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, where she conducts research and helps lead the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation Program. She received her JD from Harvard Law School in 2003, her MPA from Harvard Kennedy School in 2003, and her BS in Natural Resources from Cornell University in 1997. She was a Fulbright Scholar in India and also clerked for the Honorable Martha Craig Daughtrey on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Sharmila's work at the Carr Center draws on her prior work on economic and social rights and the environment. She was a Skadden Fellow at Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands; she was awarded the New Advocate of the Year award by the Tennessee Alliance of Legal Service for her work there. Sharmila also spent two years litigating national class action cases, and prior to graduate school, worked briefly for an environmental economics consulting firm. Sharmila is a 2011 Fellow in the Impact Center's Women's Leadership Program and Co-Chair of the Steering Committee of the Boston Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society.
