The Emerging Leaders in Environmental and Energy Policy Network

Environmental Change Institute (ECI), University of Oxford
Job Title:
DPhil Student

Sam Hampton is currently studying for a PhD at the University of Oxford, UK. His research seeks to understand how energy is consumed in everyday life, with a view to developing policies which might help to reduce the environmental impact associated with energy demand. Drawing on social scientific theory, his research challenges the dominance of behaviour change policies which seek to target the activities of single individuals or businesses and their values or motivations, instead arguing that energy is consumed as part of the complex dynamics of social and business practices.

Sam’s research builds on his professional background in sustainability and behaviour change. Most recently, he managed three large sustainability projects targeted at supporting SMEs in the UK to reduce emissions and increase competitiveness. Sam has previously worked in sustainability consulting with large corporate clients on carbon footprinting, water conservation and producer responsibility compliance. He holds a Geography degree from Oxford (BA).
